Dry eye syndrome - what is important to know

Dry eye syndrome (DES) is undoubtedly the most common pathology of the organ of vision. Four out of five patients of an eye doctor one way or another complain of dryness, burning, redness, itching, temporary visual impairment. More than 73% of eye pains are associated with increased sensitivity, irritated from the constant dryness of the surface of the eye. More than 80% of complications of eye surgery today result from inattention to the work of structures that produce tears.

Diagnostics of the eye surface using the OSA diagnostic complex allows not only to establish a type of DES, but to identify inflammation of the eyelids (blepharitis), eyelid demodicosis, and the nature of meibomian gland dysfunction. Visually record the state of each meibomian gland, parameters of osmolarity and stability of the tear film, which makes the prognosis accurate, and the effectiveness of treatment is maximum.

THERE ARE TWO VARIATIONS OF SSG

Associated with insufficient production of the watery part of the tear. The cause is hormonal disorders, stress, trauma and severe inflammatory diseases in the past.

Evaporative dry eye - associated with an increased rate of tear evaporation as a result of a lack of lipid (oily part) in it. The fatty component of tears is produced by special glands inside the eyelids (meibomian glands), and the problem that leads to disorders is called meibomian gland dysfunction (DMG). 82% of all complaints about eye fatigue "from working at the computer", hobbies with other gadgets, long-term driving, working in poor lighting mode are associated with centuries and the solution to the problem is there.

PROBLEM IN TREATMENT OF DISEASE AND ELIMINATION OF DRY EYE SYMPTOMS

The problem in treating the disease and eliminating the symptoms of dry eye, which can become debilitating, is that in our country there are traditionally no specialists dealing with this issue, considering it not important, not worthy of attention for several reasons:

  • The disease does not directly threaten vision
  • Consequences arise over the years

High-quality treatment requires not only special diagnostics and knowledge, but also attentive long-term painstaking work.

For example, patient education on the care of problem eyelids is the foundation of successful DES treatment, and it cannot be done in less than 15 minutes, which the surgeon, radiologist and primary care physician do not have; Artificial tears cannot be simply prescribed. In order for the patient to feel relief, they need to be picked up, choose the most suitable drops from dozens of possible options.

TREATMENT RESULTS

Depending on the type of pathology, several options for the result of treatment are possible:

  • Complete recovery
  • Significant relief of symptoms.

Before the start of the course, a prediction of the result and the sustainability of the result is made, on the basis of which the patient makes an informed decision about the appropriateness of the treatment.
